Army composition - 2006/03/20 15:36 Ok, since the DA release has been pushed back to early 2007 (about 12 months from now, I suppose) and I have about 1500p of DA ready (eh... well... bought... not ready ) I was thinking I'd post my current army list and have you guys add comments so I can (maybe) base my purchases on it. I'm not planning on starting a new army, I spend enough money on 1.

My tac squads form a firebase, a plasma squad is always near a lascannon squad.

Dreadnought acts as mobile firebase, roaming around my tac squads and protecting them from assaults.

Snipers act as... snipers They hide in bushes and shoot anything they see (preferably wraithlords).

Big scout squad infiltrates as far ahead as possible, keeping to a flank as much as possible, they move towards the enemy, dropping of those terminators as they go.

Assault squad along with chaplain act as a countercharge unit or as a flanking unit, waiting for the right moment to strike.

You should also know that my playgroup doesn't use many tanks, and personally, I don't like many of the tank models.

Planned purchases of confirmed models are:
- plastic sniper scouts (not that useful to have 10 probably)
- jumppack chaplain (got a converted one already, this is just a great model)

Eagerly awaited DA releases (unconfirmed) to buy:
- vindicator
- deathwing terminators

So, have you guys got any comment, advice, ... post it here

PS: didn't quite know where to post this, so feel free to move the thread.

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/20 16:53 Probably more battle company tactics if the list is up for review. Tbh honest I can't really fault your list, if you know you'r not facing any tanks aswell. Like how some warhammer players leave wizards at home, always a nice change. The only problem would be the size of your tactical sqauds, 5 man? Althought you do have plenty of squads! Not thought about a speeder or anything?

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/20 21:27 Speeder... yeah, would be a nice addition, but I hate the model

5 man squads, I know it's small, but with the "stubborn" I'm sure they don't run away, and they never seem to attract a lot of fire, so I can't see why I should make 'em bigger.

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/21 21:28 Only problem I really see is more based on opinion than anything ...

I find that smaller squad sizes (depending on the mission) lost the ability to score points rather fast with only a couple of wounds needed to remove that ability. Especially with Intractable its possible that you may want to put some of your units in cover from enemy armor but are unable to ... again its more opinion and its a interesting list nonetheless.

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/23 03:43 Well, the discussion should not be about my current army composition, but about what I would add next. I bought a terminator chaplain some time ago, but I don't really see a use for it right now, it's just such a great model

So, what should I buy next that would complement my existing army well?

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/23 13:12 You probably wont be swayed on the whole landspeeder issue, so i only really have one bit of advice. Beef the 5 man squads up to 6 men. That one more marine keeps the squad a scoring unit just that little bit longer. Lose 3 men in a 5 man squad and they're below half strength, add in the extra guy and they'd be ON half strength. Makes all the difference, and saved my backside in one game at the GT when losing one man would have ment a major loss instead of the minor one i managed to get. Re:Army composition - 2006/03/23 21:46 Hacving just reread what you typed below your list this original post was redundant .. so try #2..

if you wanted to add land speeders for the manuverability you could add 2 or 3 small groups to support the assualt squad + chaplain. (even if it meant maybe converting your own model)

or add more assault squads perhaps?

Re:Army composition - 2006/03/29 11:05 Even though you hate the model, Ravenwing speeders with HB+AC rock.

Take two or three if possible, always in single model squadrons of course.

You can always convert your own since you don't like the current versions. I've seen some nice ones made from bikes (think dune-buggy).

I'd boost any 5 man squads to 6. I actually run 8 man squads much of the time, simply to cut down on cries of "min/max cheese!". But thats just for friendly games. If you plan on playing tournaments I'd stick with 6 man squads.

You might want to add another Dread. They seem to work better, like all vehicles, in pairs.

One nice break from the normal DA list, especially since your opponents will expect you to stand a shoot, is a Crusader packed with assault Terminators and a Chaplain. Use it to flank and hack your way across his backfield, or keep it safe and use it to counter attack. Its expensive as all get out, and a huge fire magnet, but its fun if it survives!

EDIT: Oh, and plasma guns. Lots and lots of plasma guns. Storm bolters seem a bit counter productive in Heavy weapon squads, but thats just me.

Re:Army composition - 2007/09/09 03:32 also if ya dont like how the current speeder looks, you can go and place an order for the classic ravenwing landspeeder. its armed with the HB/AC standard. plus besides the whole old school look to it, its the only other speeder besides the Master of the Ravenwing speeder to have a hood orniment! (that i know of currently) in god we trust;all others must pay cash
