Troops??? - 2006/03/13 17:13 Hi I had a question about the number of troops you field.
I am planning on 20 tac marines and 10 devastators in 1500 points split in to one 10 man tac squad with Heavy plasma and plasma, One 5 man combat squad with heavy bolter, one 5 man squad with melat and vet sarg with powerfist and splitting the devs in to two 5 man squads one with 2 lascannons and one with 2 heavy bolters.
Will this be enough men on the ground? What weapon combo do you all use?

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/13 19:58 I tend to dislike plasma, myself, but it's your taste, in this case. I like the idea, though having half-strength "combat dev squads" means you waste one heavy choice. I would say, if you do want to try out this "multiple squads" approach, having an extra 10 men wouldn't hurt. it's two more 5 man squads, at least, meaning you can survive heavy focus-fire a bit better.

I think just for the squads you mentioned you're paying 630 pts. It's surely reasonable, as a shooting core, what else were you planning on fielding with it?

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/14 14:13 at the moment the rough list is
Ezekal leading the combat combat squad in a razorback
termi squad with 2* cyclones
10 plas plas squad
5 man heavy bolter squad
2 5 man dev squads
and a pred not decided on weapon options on it yet
that is short of 1500 points
was thinking of including a termi capt to go with the squad

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/14 16:23 for me, i really really hate 5 man squads so all my squads are 8 men or more. For 1500 you should get in 2/3 tac squads, assault/devistator squads or if not eather of those two, more large tac squads. Brother Xeres Signing out

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/14 20:24 I know it seems odd but I wanted the 5 or 10 man squad size for fluff reasons as thats how they were when I started playing and I don't like change
I was going for more of an old sklool look to the army

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/15 08:05 In 1500p I use 4 5 man tac squads with either plasma- or lascannon, usually deployed as a plas-las team. (2 squads near each other)

The other troops choices are filled with scouts:
5 man scout squad, 4 sniper rifles, 1 HB

10 man scout squad, 9 CCW+BP, sarge: PF+BP+teleport homer

All squads have a sarge with stubborn and the tac sarges have a storm bolter.

This comes to about 750p

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/15 08:09 Kris, you look really short on mobility. Ever thought on including a few Ravenwing Landspeeders? They're about the best bang for points our list has, I think. With the right revolting piety of tone

I agree... but I hate the landspeeder model, that's why I don't include them

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/16 11:22 Well i love the speeder. The look of it anyway. Putting it together is a totally different story.

As for the troops, I'm a fan of blocks of infantry, and many squads giving the option to combine firepower. Recently i've been running with 2x 6 man las-plas TacSquads, 2x 6man missile TacSquads and 2x8 man plas gun-plas cannon TacSquads (in 1500pt games). The 8 manners have stubborn vet sergs with powerfists. It gives a fairly adaptable force, and spares enough points for the extra treats from the other sections in the list.

Personally i wouldnt take ezekiel. By all means use the model (it does rock after all) but i dont feel like taking the gamble with the book of salvation. drop it and lose the game?...

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/16 11:54 I do love the ezekiel model
The only reason he is in there is because nobody at the store uses named charictars and I wanted to try somthing diffrent to the usual uber D.I.Y. HQ
I was planning on using him and the squad in the razorback as a mobile hole filler to reinforce a line or punch through a hole and the D6 units of my choice have to be depolyed befor I place anything rocks as well

Re:Troops??? - 2006/03/17 09:25 Squigs, dropping that book of salvation is actually a great tactic, it sucks losing the model but your entire army becomes pretty damn badass until you get it back...

True. and "pretty damn badass" is an understatement (i've had it happen to my army... ) but having the whole game from that point on hang on recovering the book isn't a gamble I like to take. I've been in situations when my opponent has just parked a land raider on top of the book and laugh as i can do nothing about it.
